Begonias -prized for their displays of colourful showy flowers and leaves

Begonia plants are very useful as they grow in shaded areas of the garden where little else will grow. All Begonia bulbs can be grown outdoors year round in subtropical or tropical climates, but in temperate climates Begonia tubers are grown outdoors as annuals, or as houseplants.

Overwintering Begonias is not always necessary in warmer climates, as winters are generally less severe. In cold climates once your Begonia tubers have finished flowering, their foliage has faded and after the first light frost of autumn Begonia tubers should be dug up. Shake off any excess soil and let the Begonia tubers dry on newspaper in a sunny location indoors. To prevent fungus each Begonia tuber should be lightly dusted with sulphur powder before wrapping them individually in newspaper and storing them in a box in a cool, dry frost free place like a garage or unheated closet until next spring.

How to Plant Begonia tuberosa

Begonia tubers should be planted preferably during March in a tray with approx 3 cm(1") of potting Soil. This needs to be kept moist and moderatly warm, the tubers will sprout in this tray and develop into plants, once the plant is approx 10 cm (4") and the danger of frost is less, bring the tray outside and harden the plants off. Transplant in the garden during May. Begonias like to have a semi shady location, moist Soil with a high compost content, however they dislike being waterlogged .
If you do not pre-plant them, you can plant direct at the desired location during April-May. Be aware that the development of the plant will take longer.
