Serrata

The Hydrangea Serrata is a beautiful flowering plant, native to the Asian mountainous regions of Korea and Japan. They are therefore very hardy. Flowering is somewhat earlier than the other types of hydrangeas and also lasts a little longer. In the fall, the flower changes to beautiful red colors. This cheerful plant is also called the mountain hydrangea and tea of heaven.

Hydrangea serrata can be grown as a low hedge, and it is quite wind tolerant

H. serrata is similar to H. macrophylla except it is a smaller more compact shrub with smaller flowers and leaves Hydrangea serrata has a rounded habit, featuring dark green, serrated (toothed), ovate leaves, and clusters of long-flowring blue or pink lacy flowerheads in summer.

The flowers appear on old wood, and a little pruning is required. It may be pruned after flowering by cutting back flowering stems to a pair of healthy buds.

Weak or winter-damaged stems should be pruned in early spring.
