Buxus sempervirens - common boxwood is the classic formal box hedge
The border hedge allows you to divide up your garden and create new and defined areas. It’s a great method to separate your paths and beds. These hedges are usually made with evergreen plants so they will provide you all year round interest.
A formal hedge will require lots of cutting and maintaining fine lines, so if you are up for the task you should choose something like Buxus (box) or Taxus (yew). An informal hedge will require occasional cutting and trimming so they will suit the not so experienced garden, where you can enjoy the trimming on a sunny afternoon.
For an informal hedge you can choose our flowering hedge collection or shrubs such as Viburnums. Buxus sempervirens ( Buxaceae ) is the classic formal box hedge. The advantages of a Box hedge or border is that it needs very little water it only requires one or two trimmings per year. It’s virtually indestructible and it grows in almost any soil type, except for a very heavy or poorly drained soil in full sun or deep shade, so it’s the perfect choice for a low border that is partly in full sun and partly in deep shade.
